Information about Allergies

Allergies are an immune system response to a non-harmful substance, called an allergen. Allergens can be anything from pollen and pet dander to food or even medication.

Some people may only have seasonal allergies while others suffer year round, but most allergy sufferers experience symptoms in the spring and fall because of increased pollen counts. What type of allergy you have is determined by what type of allergen is affecting you; some common types include hay fever, cat allergies, shellfish allergies, etc.

Allergic Symptoms

Allergies are a common health problem that can cause symptoms such as coughing, sneezing and difficulty breathing. Allergy sufferers are often prescribed medications to help alleviate these symptoms but it's important to remember that there are many things you can do at home to ease your allergy discomfort before turning to medication.

Clinical Allergy

Clinical allergy is a specialty that examines the role of environmental factors (foods and drugs) in medical conditions. A clinical allergist is required to help with rhinitis and asthma. Allergy does not cause a disease. It is a mechanism that can produce a range of symptoms in patients. Multisystem allergies can cause multisystem problems in patients with allergy. This may make it difficult to fit into the traditional organ-based specialty model. A clinical allergist must be skilled in treating a wide range of conditions. They should also be able offer a holistic opinion to patients with multiple allergies, such as rhinitis, asthma, or eczema.

An allergy consultation should include a detailed history that focuses on the patient's experiences, rather than what they have been told was the cause. Although the patient's perspective can be valuable, it is often incorrect to assume that allergies are the cause of their symptoms. It is equally important to rule out allergy causes and to find the culprit allergen.

Adult allergy sufferers are typically young adults who are working. Although there is relatively low mortality due to allergy, there are significant morbidity and adverse effects on quality of life. Life-changing treatments can be achieved with accurate diagnosis and expert advice.

Allergic Attacks

No one wants to suffer through the discomfort of an allergy attack. Whether it's from pollen, pet dander or dust mites, allergies can affect your quality of life and make everyday tasks difficult.
